WE ARE THE LIGHT

an ongoing project of a photographic mural for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation Facilities. Furthermore, my dream was, with the help of a doctor, to put my photography throughout the Harlem Hospital Pediatrics center. To my sadness it did not happen even though the doctor did everything for it to happen.

“A child must learn to believe that he is somebody worthwhile and that he can do something praiseworthy” - Benjamin Mays, US Civil Rights Leader

Little book made for me by my assistant dear friend.

I used to take these children to Upstate New York and we would get lost in the forest. It was very beautiful there and the children were building little huts with so much joy. One day I gave them my watch and said, “You can run everywhere you’d like. But in a half hour you need to be back.” They came back after ten minutes very sad as they met a white man who told them, “You don’t belong here. You have to go back to where you belong.” That was why they ran back fast. After that very sad experience I couldn’t go there anymore. I did not want to take another chance like that.
