JAPAN

Throughout 1987 to 2000 I traveled back and forth to a small Tokyo ryokan. In the hot spring, everyone wore the same stripped robe. I still have mine.

I hitchhiked with my dear friend in the mountains some part of Japan far away. They had never seen a white person and they were touching my skin. They were so kind to inniate me into what had to be done in the bath.

With my friend, we decided to take a mud bath to make our skin feel good and look beautiful.

These color images were a commission from a Japanese fashion magazine.

My first photograph in Japan at the Yanaka Cemetery, 1987. I was so lucky to meet this beautiful lady with a bird, next the tomb of her husband.

A famous artist who made significant changes in the world of kimonos, 1989. I was so lucky she invited me to her home.

This was the first time I had been face-to-face with a monkey. We were both very surprised in silence, the monkey and I.
